South Lake High School Student Serves as Page in State Senate

OLYMPIA – Last month, South Lake High School student Miguel Perez had the opportunity to serve as a page in the Washington State Senate.

Pages spend a week at the Capitol where they assist senators and staff, attend lectures with guest speakers and go to page school where they create their own bills in a mock committee setting. Perez originally applied to the page program because of his interest in government and law.

“It was interesting to learn more about how laws are really made,” Perez said.

Perez — a 16-year old sophomore at South Lake High School in Rainier Beach — wants to become a lawyer. He also enjoys playing sports.

He said highlights of the page program included attending page school and helping in the Senate during floor action.

Sen. Pramila Jayapal, D-Seattle, sponsored Perez’s week-long experience in the Legislature.

“It was my pleasure to sponsor Miguel,” said Jayapal. “He was engaged and helpful and I hope he enjoyed his week with us in the Senate.”
